Advair
The Advair Diskus inhaler provides relief to sufferers of asthma. The combination of the drugs fluticasone and salmeterol shrinks the swelling of breathing passages, providing relief to the patient. It received approval by the FDA in the year 2000.
Soon after the approval, studies began to show a marked increase in the risk for "serious" asthma attacks when an Advair Diskus or a similar drug was used by a patient. While short-term symptoms were relieved, the chance for more developed and serious symptoms increased.
Use of Advair can have the following dangerous, unintended side effects: bronchitis, cough, diarrhea, difficulty speaking, muscle and bone pain, vomiting, headaches, stomach pain, hoarseness, nausea, sore throat, fungal infection of the mouth, and sinus pain. If you believe you have experienced any of these symptoms, or a severe asthma attack, as the result of your use of Advair, contact an experienced Advair attorney from our firm as soon as you can.
In August 2003, the FDA announced new safety information and warnings to the labeling for drug products, such as Advair inhalers, that contain salmeterol. The annoucnement included a new boxed warning about a small, but significant, increased risk of life-threatening asthma episodes or asthma-related deaths observed in patients using salmeterol-based drugs in a recently completed large U.S. safety study.
On May 16, 2006, The FDA announced that the product label for Advair has been updated with a warning detailing the increased risk of severe asthma or death.
