Dangerous Drugs - Celexa
Celexa is produced by Forest Pharmaceuticals and was introduced to the U.S. market in July of 1998. It is an SSRI class of drug and is commonly prescribed to patients as an antidepressant.
Because the FDA has not given Celexa approval as a pediatric antidepressant, Forest Pharmaceuticals has been legally prohibited from marketing the drug for this purpose. However, it has been and continues to be used for this popular off-label purpose. The use of Celexa as a pediatric anti-depressant prompted investigation by the New York Attorney General.
On January 7th 2004, Forest Laboratories received a request for information regarding how the company tested and promoted the drug for off-label actions. The probe revealed a past test revealing a failed clinical trial of Celexa amongst children and adolescents.
In addition, use of the drug has been linked an increased risk of death amongst those who use the drug and also suffer from coronary heart disease. Former or current heart disease victims should seek medical advice before using Celexa or other antidepressants.
