Dangerous Drugs - Celebrex
Celebrex, otherwise known by its generic name, Celecoxib, is a COX-2 inhibitor used to treat several forms of arthritis and menstrual pains. For a time, Celebrex was the most advertised drug in our nation's history. Over $71 million dollars was poured into television ads and other avenues of marketing to ensure Celebrex was prescribed to as many patients as possible, whether they required the drug or not. This practice was stopped when Celebrex was revealed to cause high blood pressure.
In February 2005, the FDA sought to examine whether Celebrex and other COX-2 inhibitors offered enough benefits to patients to remain on the market, whether the warnings for the drugs required revision, and if further study of the drugs was necessary. After a two day conference amongst FDA advisory committees, the studies "strongly suggested" the entire class of drugs raises the chances of cardiovascular problems significantly. Bextra was pulled from the market shortly thereafter, however Celebrex was allowed to remain available due to a lower incidence rate of dangerous cardiovascular and skin allergy side effects.
