Dangerous Drugs - Coreg
Coreg is a beta-blocker which affects the nerve impulse responses of certain parts of the body. The resulting decrease in the heart's need for blood and oxygen results in a reduced workload, which helps the heart beat more efficiently.
A product of GlaxoSmithKline, Coreg was approved by the FDA in March of 2003. Coreg assists in the treatment of high blood pressure, heart failure, and heart attacks. Common side effects include tiredness, lightheadedness, dizziness, body or leg swelling, headache, diarrhea, vision changes, joint pain and sleep problems.
In October of 2005, the FDA issued a label safety change for Coreg. The revised label is to include a warning for two severe skin reactions: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, or SJS, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, or TEN. Both skin diseases cause similar symptoms, including rash, skin peeling, and sores on the mucous membranes.
