Dangerous Drugs - Ketek

Ketek, otherwise known as Telithromycin, is a popular antibiotic used to treat acute bacterial infections stemming from bronchitis, sinusitis and pneumonia. It was approved for use by the FDA in 2004. In its first two years on the market, Ketek was associated with a dozen cases of severe liver problems that included four deaths, the first of which occurred in January 2005. One year later, federal regulators decided to investigate an unknown number of cases regarding Ketek, and in December 2006, a panel of FDA advisors met to make a final decision on the controversial drug.

Despite allegations of fraudelent data on the drug's initial approval application, more than a dozen cases of liver failure, at least four deaths, and an incidence of blurry vision for 1 out of every 100 patients, the panel left Ketek on the market, advising that its sinitis and bronchitis indications be removed and the drug only be prescribed for patients battling pneumonia.
