Dangerous Drugs - Palladone
Users of the popular painkiller Palladone can suffer potentially fatal overdose reactions when the powerful painkiller drug is taken with alcohol. Palladone is a once-a-day version of the painkiller Hydromorphone. It uses slow-release delivery to slowly administer the potent narcotic over a 24-hour period. The FDA has claimed the slow-release function can fail, causing the entire dose to enter the bloodstream at one time and potentially lead to fatality.
Under order by the FDA, Purdue Pharma removed Palladone from the consumer drug market in July 2005. Patient risk associated with the drug was considered too substantial. "Dose-dumping" can cause the entire contents of a time-release drug to be released within a short time period, resulting in toxicity.
